A Bank of America Green Credit Card?
November 30th, 2007 by jayb
Someone deserves congratulations on the launch of their new green credit card. I'm just not sure whether that is Bank of America or Brighter Planet.
The credit card earns carbon offsets instead of frequent flier mileage or free gifts. It is a Bank of America card but you won't find information about it on the Bank of America home page as of this morning. All the information about it and the carbon offsets that it earns are at BrighterPlanet.com.
Bank of America may be taking a cautious approach to this card until they get a sense of whether it will be controversial or not.
Carbon offsets generate a fair amount of debate about the morality of paying someone else to clean up your CO2. I don't subscribe to that point of view. As long as the CO2 reduction you are paying for is real and is really caused by my donation, I see it as no different than making a donation to a charity to fight poverty. [Ed. note: EnergyRace will soon be letting a non-profit carbon offset provider use the EnergyRace web site and calculators.]

This is a great idea and a good way to raise money for a worthy cause. A Navajo proverb always comes to mind whenever I read about global warming and going green:
“We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.”
