Car Makers Pay Fines for Exceeding US Mileage Standards

December 12th, 2007 by jayb

Lost in the debate about whether US auto fuel economy standards should be raised is the fact that many car manufacturers are not meeting today's fuel standards but are instead paying fines.

Edmunds.com writes about a recent government study that shows that some car makers seem to be choosing to pay the fines rather than comply with US Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards.

One can see that if the fines are not high enough a car maker might decide that paying the fines is better than investing in more efficient car designs.

According to the report, BMW and Mercedes-Benz have paid over $500 million in fines since 1983.
