Home Improvement is Getting Greener

November 7th, 2007 by jayb

While catching up on my This Old House home improvement magazine subscription, I was pleasantly surprised to see how many of the articles were focused on green building materials and products.descriptive text about the image content

The November 2007 issue has a great description of how a geothermal home heating/cooling system works and what makes it so efficient.  Like many home heating and cooling system projects, a geothermal system is a $15,000-$20,000 project but geothermal is 30-70% more efficient than conventional systems.

There is also an article on solar power and the new high end solar product, solar shingles.  Solar shingles are well, small shingle-sized and shingle-looking solar panels that are built into the roof.  They eliminate the need for a solar panel that sits on top of your roof.

This Old House also writes about incandescent, compact fluorescent and LED light bulbs and has a section on green products for your home.

It's a good sign of the times that a magazine supported by home improvement product manufacturers sees the interest in sustainable homes.

I really love This Old House. The solar shingles sound really great! I have been doing some research on green homes and modular buildings lately. They seem to be a very environmentally conscious choice of construction. This Old House had a show featuring modular homes a few years ago, I will try to look it up.
